How do I replace my Rooftop Condenser fan?
A step by step guide to replacing your condenser fan in the unlikely event you need a new one!
Tools needed: 8mm socket (to remove the top case) and a P2 Phillips-head screwdriver/bit, wire cutters or scissors Optional tools: Drill/driver, needle nose pliers, flat head screw driver Materials: Small zipties to secure wire once replaced Optional materials: Silicon Sealant/Caulk
- Using your 8mm socket, remove the 8 bolts to remove the top case from your air conditioning unit.
- If you have a full sized conditioner (2000r and 3000r), remove the four 10mm bolts holding the fan down. For the Mini, you'll see 4 phillips screws holding your fan down.
- Full sized units usually have zipties holding down the wiring along the fan housing and to the controller. Follow the wire and clip and zip ties holding the wire down to the air conditioning unit. (Remember where the zip ties were, you're going to want to connect your new wire the same way). For Minis, you'll have phillips-head bolts and brackets holding your wire in place. Two of the brackets use the two bolts on the left of the first Mini picture . The last has its own pointed phillips screw you'll need to remove. Take the brackets off the wire and save them for your new fan.
- Next, you'll pry up the connector and disconnect the fan. This is easier with needle nose pliers as shown, but you can use a screwdriver to pry up each clip one at a time and the wiggle the connector free. Make sure the small orange gasket comes with the connector as well, or remove it from the post if not. Lift and remove the whole fan assembly and wire, set to the side or dispose of it.
- Put the new fan assembly on top of the condenser. Make sure the long edge aligns with the long edge of the condenser. Make sure all the holes line up, place the bolts loosely in each hole (Minis don't forget to reinstall wire clamps). Tighten the bolts in opposite corners first (as shown below), making sure not to tighten too much (the plastic housing may crack).
- Reinstall the last wire clamp (Minis) or ziptie down the wire where the previous ties were (2000r and 3000r). Reconnect the fan connector, you may apply silicon over the top edge as shown for extra water and vibration protection.
- Reinstall the top case, make sure to place each of the 8, 8mm bolts. Tighten down gently, the case may crack if you screw down too tightly. Retest your unit
