Can I use the AUX fuel port adapter or should I install the metal fuel standpipe included with the heater?
Why is it important to use the metal standpipe with the gas or diesel air heaters?
When it comes to using the AUX fuel port vs the metal standpipe, this mostly depends if you want the most reliability out of the heater at elevations above 6k feet. Altitude can impact the reliability of these heaters as low as 3.5k feet. Our heaters are designed to work at elevations beyond 11k feet, some are doing this with the AUX fuel port, but this is not always possible as it depends on the entirety of the fuel delivery system.
When deciding, many start out with the aux fuel port, and if it works, it works. But installing the metal standpipe included with our kits is hand-over-fist the best way to ensure the best fuel delivery and reliability with these types of heaters.
The reason for this is because most AUX fuel ports have a softer larger inside diameter fuel pickup straw that is not ideal for these heaters. Rather, they are meant for running high fuel need devices (think carpet cleaning machine in back of van). This impacts the inherently weak vacuum/pull side of the fuel line and is like hooking a coffee straw up to a milkshake straw and attempting to suck and hold a vacuum. Additionally, our metal standpipe does not flex under pressure as the larger softer fuel pickup straw do, which absorbs the neccessary pressures needed for proper fuel delivery.
With these heaters, nothing control the fuel delivery after the pump, so it is critical to getting the fuel lines and fuel delivery correct, and the metal standpipe with 2mm inside diameter is the foundation of proper fuel delivery.
