Can I add filters and screens to my Air Conditioning system?

Discussing why customers should not add filters or screens to AC units.

People often ask if they can add extra filters and screens to their Air Conditioner unit, but it's actually very important that you do not!

Air Conditioning is all about airflow. Airflow through the space, but also airflow through your Conditioner system. Air conditioners use coils similar to your vehicle's radiator; and they need to breathe! That's why one of the most important things you can do is clean your air intakes monthly (while in use) and clean your condenser coil at least every 6 months (or 3 months in heavily dusty/leafy areas). For Rooftop units, the evaporator coil is comparatively difficult to clean. Which is why cleaning the intake needs to happen even more often. Adding filters on the intake or screens with very small holes on your exhaust (for underbench models) is the same as a dirty screen or blocked vent cover. It makes the system work harder to pull and push the air necessary to move heat out of your space!

We understand indoor air quality concerns are at an all-time high. However, adding a filter to the intake, cold air output, or exhaust (of select models) can actually decrease the efficacy and lifespan of your equipment. Air quality is going to be best achieved by regularly cleaning your intake, replacing the filter on your vehicle (if applicable) or buying a separate air purifier.
